A team of researchers at  ETH Zurich  has developed a rooftop mat made of a five-millimeter-thick polymer that can absorb water when it rains. The material changes properties along with the temperature—the mat becomes hydrophobic as it warms up, and the water is expelled, extracting heat from the building in a process the researchers compare to human sweat. The idea is to cool the interior with less reliance on air conditioning. It's hard to imagine how this is possibly going to work. The basic physics and thermodynamics of the plan are sound—water can transfer heat as it evaporates. But roofs, for the past several hundred years, have been designed to shed water. Found along the sidelines of Panasonic's CEATEC booth, the AX series Ultrabook is a foldable  hybrid that will be arriving in Japanese stores later this month. Ready to launch with Windows 8 (both standard or Pro) built-in, the Ultrabook houses a 11.6-inch touch display at the  ever-popular  1,366 x 768 resolution, although it feels a little on the thick side, and is  unmistakably Panasonic  in its styling. Connectivity options are legion, with two USB 3.0 ports on the right edge, accompanied by HDMI socket. On the other side, there's an SD card reader, ethernet, power, mic and headphone ports.
