Top Mobile Development Trends of 2013
HTML5 Takes Over
Until recently, native apps drove the development community on mobile. Developer teams would assemble resources, choose an initial platform, such as iOS or Android, on which to develop a product or app and ship it at high cost both in funding and in time. But 2013 is HTML5’s year. According to Lunn, the mobile industry is coming to “a stage where a less skilled developer can write apps very fast with compatibility across multiple devices.” This “democratization” of web-based mobile development will speed the rate of mobile innovation in nearly every industry.
Mobile Device Price Wars
Mobile device makers across all platforms have begun to price their devices down, allowing more consumers and developers to gain access to products, payments and information. Speculation abounds that even Apple is set to announce a more affordable iPhone this year. Combined with widespread HTML5 development, mobile apps will become exponentially more affordable to develop and ship and they’ll reach more consumers than ever before.
Cloud Service Becomes the Norm
For industries to fully tap into the mobile market, cloud-based services must become ubiquitous across multiple platforms. Developers focusing on shipping robust, secure mobile products based in the cloud will enable the multi-screen experiences and cheap devices that rely on it, something consumers crave.
“It's going to come down to the companies that make your life easier on mobile, rather than just accommodate it,” says Lunn.
These trends are all interconnected and compound on each another.
