Conscious and Unconscious

Perhaps the best way to illustrate the relationship between the conscious and unconscious minds is the story of Jason's spring. When he was a boy, Jason used to visit his grandfather's camp, deep in the woods. It was located down in a valley, with the nearest neighbor over a mile away. The camp had no telephone, electricity, or indoor plumbing.
When Jason visited, one of his chores was to fetch water from the spring behind the camp. The spring was very shallow, and when he scooped up water, he was only able to fill his pail half full. The pail always scraped along the bottom of the spring and roiled up the debris that had settled there. Then he would have to wait until the water cleared.
When Jason tried to fill his pail again, he lost the water he had already scooped up and was only able to fill it to the same level as before. Try as hard as he might, he was only able to fill half the pail. He finally returned to the camp, disappointed at his failure to complete his chore.
When Jason's grandfather saw his dejected face, he asked Jason what was the matter. Jason showed him the pail, only half full of water. Grandfather laughed. He took a dipper from a hook near the old iron sink and led Jason back to the spring.
Grandfather bent down, carefully filled the dipper, and emptied it into the pail. Soon water spilled over the top. Jason took the dipper and filled another pail. He could have filled pails all day long. Under the surface of the shallow spring was a source of water that flowed upward from deep in the earth.
Like Jason's childhood spring, your mind has two levels. Your conscious mind is the surface and your unconscious mind is the deep reservoir underneath. The conscious mind makes up only about 10 percent of your total mind. When you try to get too much information from your mind at one time, you can roil up your critical thinking. As you develop skills in self-hypnosis, you will find it easier to get information from your reservoir at a comfortable pace.
